The prisoners first lot were 10 Italians - then the 2 Germans came afterwards - they were used to work in agriculture and less likely to want to escape. The Germans were very quiet and devious, going into the house without being asked and tuning into the wireless. They laughed when they heard that Plymouth had been bombed.
We had to give the Italians hot food, so we had to give them heaters to cook them on. The Germans had cold food because we were not allowed to cook for them. They mostly dug the garden as my father was ill. They also helped pick the apples. Food was rationed but with the help of garden produce we all managed. The prisoners worked for us about 18 months overall.
