I joined when I was about 19. I was in the Land Army for around 3 years, but then I got married so I left. I already worked on a farm so I joined the Land Army to make it official. I did enjoy being in the Land Army because I loved the animals and it wasn't any different to what I'd been doing before.
First I was sent to work at a farm just outside of Exeter but I was soon moved to North Devon because the Farmer thought that his son had taken an 'interest' in me! On the farm in North Devon we mainly milked cows and then drove the milk to Barnstaple for it to be churned in the Dairy. I was once trampled by a cow! She was a new one and I was milking her, then all of a sudden she kicked back and I was pulled under her! I had to be pulled out by someone and I luckily only got a black eye! When I drove down to the dairy the next day, all the girls were wondering where I got the black eye from!
There were three of us living on the farm. There was one girl from London, she was quite nice but wasn't used to all of the cows to start with, ad the other girl was from the country (like me) but was quite snobby. We all shared a room in the small farmhouse. Everyday, the Farmer drove one of us to Barnstaple with the milk. The Farmer had 'Roving hands' so I offered to drive the milk to Barnstaple along with another girl, as I could drive by then.
We were given khaki breeches, a green jumper and a big hat with a very big brim. We didn't have to wear the uniform, except in the parades in Exeter. Generally we did wear the uniform because it saved our own clothes from getting ruined. The parades in Exeter were quite fun because it was a change from the repetitiveness of life on the farm. In the parades we used to sit in the back of a trailer.
