The Prisoner of war camp was moved from Bramham Park, Yorkshire to Tavistock.
The Prisoners of War from Tavistock had to clear the debris from the streets of Plymouth. Two prisoners of war from the camp are known to have helped an ex Royal Navy gentleman at Dousland tend his large garden until they were sent home. They also made baskets and slippers, Germans were very good at making toys and wooden carvings. They had to paint railings at various different army barracks, bases and farms around the area. Others would saw timber and firewood, and doing manual work that the men who were away fighting the war would usually have done. Because of the shortage of labour in 1945, use was made of prisoners of war for laying the foundations of the temporary houses and shops. Around 300 Austrians were employed by the Ministry of Works for this work and they were not allowed to mix with other British workmen. This was also true for prisoners of war all over the country.
